چکیده مقاله
In this study, the performance of an up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor in treating synthetic textile dyeing wastewater containing azo dye Reactive Red 195 was evaluated under three salinity levels of 5, 20, and 35 g/L NaCl over three operational phases (72 days). All experiments were conducted at a hydraulic retention time of 24 h and an operating temperature of 32±2 °C. Results showed that at 5 g/L NaCl, the removal efficiencies of total chemical oxygen demand (CODt) and soluble chemical oxygen demand (CODs) were 89.39±0.00% and 91.89±0.65%, respectively, while color removal reached 75.4±2.28%, and biogas production rate was 6.3±0.3 L/d. Increasing salinity to 20 g/L caused a decline in the MLVSS/MLSS ratio to 0.56, with CODt removal dropping to 80.49±0.32%. However, under these conditions, CODs removal efficiency remained unaffected (94.0±0.65%) and color removal efficiency and biogas production rate increased to 84.92±0.50% and 7.3±0.1 L/d, respectively. At the highest salinity of 35 g/L, the MLVSS/MLSS ratio as well as CODt removal efficiency decreased further to 0.50 and 57.44±0.40%, respectively, whereas CODs removal efficiency remained relatively constant (91.51±0.4%). Biogas production rate dropped to 5.9±0.1 L/d, but color removal continued to rise, reaching 87.03±1.45%. These findings indicate that elevated salinity primarily inhibits methanogenic activity and leads to increased CODt due to cell lysis, while CODs remains largely unaffected. Moreover, cell lysis enhances biomass surface exposure, thereby promoting the physical removal of dye even under high salinity stress.
